Eastenders Soap Trailer (Independent Research)

Soap trailers have always been a popular way to persuade people into watching that particular soap. Usually with soap trailers, they tend to use small clips that you see later on in the soap, to attract audience members into watching the soap. To attract audience members they would usually use small clips that involve quick pace action to get the viewers interested and want to watch the soap to see what is happening. Also using quicker clips to capture the audience will show the viewers what is going on within the soap without watching it and will also determine if they are interested in what they see. Recently on BBC1, December 6th 2012, the official Eastenders trailer for the Christmas episodes had been released which had been focusing on the most recent big stories/secrets that have been hidden and kept secret for the months.

For several months, the story of Kat Moon's secret lover has been the biggest in the soap Eastenders. In recent episodes in between the months October-November, Alfie has become very suspicious about Kats behaviour, and that she has re-united with her mystery lover, although she has told him that it was over. Therefore, looking at the Christmas trailer, tension is building as you can tell that Kat's affair is soon to be revealed. This idea of the affair being revealed is given in the trailer as the audiences are given small clips from the big episodes to view, for example a clip is given within the trailer of Kat begging Alfie not to break up with her after he smashes the door down to her secrets lovers bedsit. From looking at this part of the trailer, the audience
would be really interested, especially if they are regular viewers
of Eastenders as Kat's secret affair is very close to being revealed.

Another storyline that has been advertised within the Christmas trailer, is the story of the Branning family. Quite recently, people who watch Eastenders have noticed that Max Branning has some issues with holding a secret, which only his brother knows about, Derek. However, due to being felt disrespected by his brother Max to often, Derek has plans to reveal Max's secret around the Christmas episodes. Also in the late December, Derek is supposedly going to be killed off, and because of the all the enemies he has made, who will it be to end Derek's life?

When looking at this trailer, we noticed that they used titles throughout the trailer. Therefore from looking through the trailer, we thought that it would have been a good idea to use titles throughout our own soap trailer to give the audience a better understanding of what they are seeing.

Actors (Group Planning)

Before we started filming scenes that were going to be placed within our soap trailer, we had to find characters, that were best suited for our target audience. To suit our target audience, we thought is was best to find characters around the similar ages of the target audience, to make the soap more realistic. Also within our soap trailer we wanted to raise two to three stories, which involve issues that the particular character is facing within the trailer. Having characters around the same age as our target audience would help make the issues/ problems raised, more realistic. Below is the lists of the characters that we had collected throughout the planning stage of the coursework.

  • Edward Tyrell (Introducing Soap)
  • Philp Gatward (Drug Issues)
  • Mark Read (Financial Issues)
  • Alex Doyle (Drug Issues)
  • Martin Gatward (Family Issues)
  • Penny Gatward (Family Issues)
